BREAKING: Deputies shoot suspect in northwest Georgia homicide
Deputies shot a man Thursday morning while responding to a deadly domestic dispute in northwest Georgia, according to the GBI.
The Gordon County Sheriff’s Office requested the state agency’s help to investigate the officer-involved shooting about 3:30 a.m., GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said.
It is the 58th such investigation the agency has opened this year.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also tracks officer-involved shootings that don't involve the GBI, and those numbers sometimes differ from the GBI's tally.
According to Gordon County Sheriff Mitch Ralston, the wounded man is a suspect in a domestic disturbance on Mt. Zion Road that resulted in the death of a woman. Deputies first responded to the scene just after midnight and began negotiating with the suspect for his surrender.
Deputies at some point opened fire on the suspect, the GBI said. He was treated and released from a local hospital and is in custody on a murder charge.
“No one else is being sought in connection with this event, and the Regional GBI Office is assisting the Sheriff’s Office in this investigation,” Ralston said in a news release.
The names of the suspect and the victim as well as further details about the deadly incident have not been released.
